PAKISTAN’S POLITICAL MAP AND INDIA

PAKISTAN’S POLITICAL MAP AND INDIA:

It is not a new discussion over territorial disputes between the two nuclear powers. To understand the political-map dilemma lately surfaced after Pakistan changed its political map by exhibiting Azaad Jammu and Kashmir as part of Pakistan, history of Kashmir must be understood. It was an 86,000 sq mile area in the northern part of the erstwhile subcontinent. This geographical dispute was set about after British transferred powers to Muslims and Hindus in 1947. India, Pakistan and China geographically located near Kashmir claimed parts of Kashmir. Historically, Kashmir neither was part of Pakistan nor India and less discussed part of Kashmir which has been occupied by China i.e. Aksai Chin and Ladkh were also not parts of China but of Kashmir which was an independent princely state. India initiated this dispute by occupying 101,338 km, Pakistan controls 85,846 km area and China has control over about  37,555 km area.

After the partition, princely states were allowed to either accede to Pakistan or India and or keep their independent state intact. All princely states decided a side which they thought was politically and geographically beneficial to them with the exception of Kashmir, which was ruled by a Non-Muslim ruler but the almost the entire population consisted of Muslims. Given the ibid intricate and complex nature of Kashmir, none of the shareholder ever presented a viable and acceptable solution and therefore every now and then are at war with each other.

The role of UNO has remained been passive and ineffective in attending to Kashmir question. UN’s resolution in favour of Pakistan’s stance on Kashmir has always been countered and opposed by India and the same happens when India tries to use its influence in legitimizing their claim over the entire Kashmir. Likewise, China’s occupation of parts of Kashmir has been approved by Pakistan given the political and strategic relations between the two and India never accepted her claim. Similarly, other mediators like Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) could never come up with a viable solution of the subject issue. Its member states including Pakistan and India and others having geographical and political disputes with each other have never been offered evenhanded resolution of their differences by SCO. Thus, SCO's role in mediating, resolving and amending ties of its members states has remained been ineffective and passive.

Thus, whether India and Pakistan went to wars over Kashmir, China and India got into ugly border skirmishes over Kashmir or a third party ever wished to mediate to resolve the issue, every time one important aspect of the issue has been sidelined, ignored and intentionally put aside i.e. Kashmiris, the heirs, the people on the receiving end. Since 1948, Kashmiris have never been heard and asked about their wishes and what they wanted. Neither reshaping borders lines, redrawing LAC or LOC nor coming up with changes in Constitution or Maps will resolve Kashmir issue. IF the claimants wish to see a prosperous region and have enhanced trade activities, Kashmir question needs an answer acceptable to the people of Kashmir.
